Daha sonra matematik, edebiya, mantık, tefsir, hadis ve grammer dallarında öğrenimgördü. (6) Genç yaşında alimlerin meclisine girdi. Bilgi ve faziletlerinden istifade etti. her birinden icazetnameler aldı. (9) Döneminin bilimadamlarından dersler aldı. 20 yaşlarından itibaren devlet idaresinde görevler üstlendi. (6)İbni Haldun'u tahsil hayatından uzaklaştıran ve hayatı boyunca üzerinde etkili olan iki önemli hadiseden ilki; babasını veba hastalığı yüzünden kaybetmesi, ikincisi ise vebadan kurtulan alimlerin Tunus'tan Mağrib'e göç etmesidir. (8)İbn-i haldun, Tunus emirinin başkatipliğine getirildi. Bu yıllarda, Kuzey Afrika'da bulunan İslam ülkeleri arasında siyasi ve fikri mücadeleler vardı. Nitekim bir süre sonra Tunus Hükümdarı bir savaşta öldürüldü. Onun yerine geçen idareciler ise, İbni Haldun'a karşı cephe aldılar. Bu nedenle İbni Haldun kardeşinin bulunduğu fas'a geçmek zorunda kaldı. Zamanla burada da siyasi kargaşalar başgösterdi. (6)İbni haldın, yüksek memuriyetlerde bulunarak, bir süre Tunus'ta idari görevlerde bulunduktan sonra, 1352'de Batı'ya seyahat etti ve bir müddet Becaye sultanlığını idare etti. Fas hanedanının bütün Mağrıb'ı ele geçirmesi üzerine önce Fas'a, sonra da 1362'de Gırnata'ya gitti.
