- Chopping Wood (1984) is the story of a Anger dinner party held on Gentz Street in Vienna, at the home of the artist couple Auersbergers. The first singular narrator sits in his armchair and observes the troupe waiting for the famous Burg Theater actor, who promises to come to this dinner as a guest of honor around half past eleven. Many of the guests gathered on the occasion of the funeral of fellow artist Joana in Kilb earlier the same day, whom the narrator described as his fairy tale character. Throughout the narrator's silent but angry tirade, which proceeds with the counterpoint technique; Joana's thoughts on her life and suicide are intertwined with her public accusations against the people she befriended in the 50s. The arrival of the Burg player will produce an unexpected, devastating ending.His often entertaining, extraordinarily controversial novel, Chopping Wood, in which he blended Bernhard's sharp observations with the power of satire, reminiscent of the works of Ibsen and Strindberg, was immediately banned in Austria when it was first published.Probably none of Bernhard's other books could provide a better introduction to his entire work.
